MSC Implements Emergency Fuel Fees on Key Trade Routes
7 Mar
Summary
- MSC introduces emergency fuel surcharges for Mediterranean cargo.
- New fees apply to shipments to Indian sub-continent, Red Sea, and East Africa.
- Surcharges vary for dry and refrigerated containers, impacting shipping costs.

As of March 7, 2026, the shipping company MSC announced a significant change in its pricing structure. Effective March 16, 2026, an emergency fuel surcharge will be applied to all cargo originating from the Mediterranean region, including areas like West Mediterranean, Adriatic, East Mediterranean, Greece, and Turkey, as well as the Black Sea.
This new surcharge targets shipments to key destinations: the Indian sub-continent, the Red Sea, and East Africa. The additional cost for dry containers heading to the Red Sea will be $30 per TEU, while refrigerated containers will incur a $50 per TEU fee. For East Africa, dry containers will face a $60 per TEU surcharge, and refrigerated containers will be charged $90 per TEU.
Furthermore, cargo destined for the Indian sub-continent will also see increased costs. Dry containers will be subject to a $40 per TEU surcharge, and refrigerated containers will be charged $60 per TEU. These adjustments by MSC, the world's largest carrier of ocean container cargo, are set to influence shipping expenses across these vital trade lanes.
