27 Oct
Summary
- Morningstar CEO warns against excessive AI stock investment optimism.
- India's growth is attractive, but current valuations are high.
- Gold serves as a portfolio diversifier, not a growth asset.
Kunal Kapoor, CEO of Morningstar, expressed concerns during a recent Mumbai visit regarding the significant concentration of investments in artificial intelligence stocks. He cautioned that excessive optimism about AI's benefits translating into company earnings could lead to market disappointment.
Kapoor noted that the market is anticipating that current AI spending will eventually boost revenues and margins. However, he stressed that this process is rarely linear and that global markets are becoming overly reliant on a few AI-linked companies.
Addressing India's market, Kapoor acknowledged its strong growth potential but pointed out that current valuations are elevated. He suggested that several emerging markets currently offer more attractive valuations and expected returns.
Foreign portfolio investors have been net sellers of Indian equities since July 2025, with substantial outflows observed in 2026. Kapoor also commented on the role of gold, stating it functions as a portfolio diversifier against uncertainty rather than a growth asset, advising modest allocations.
