Modern Bazaar Seeks Partner Amidst Financial Woes
12 Aug
Summary
- Modern Bazaar is in talks with Reliance Retail and Le Marche for stake sale.
- The chain is seeking a valuation of ₹100-150 crore but buyers offer less.
- Sales have declined due to quick commerce shift and rising overhead costs.

Gourmet grocery retailer Modern Bazaar is actively seeking a strategic partner, exploring options for either a majority stake sale or an equity investment. Potential suitors include Reliance Retail and DS Group-owned Le Marche, among other premium chains. The company has reportedly set a valuation target of approximately ₹100-150 crore, although discussions suggest that a final deal may be struck at a significantly lower valuation.
This strategic initiative arises as Modern Bazaar grapples with declining offline sales, largely attributed to the rapid rise of quick commerce platforms, which have captured consumer preference for both gourmet and daily essentials. Diminishing quality control and mounting overhead costs have further exacerbated the chain's financial strain. Some vendor payments for fresh bakery and frozen food items are also reportedly pending.
Despite these challenges, Modern Bazaar's owner, Kunaal Kumar, confirmed active discussions with investors who can accelerate growth. He emphasized that the chain is not for an outright sale but is open to collaborations. The company plans an aggressive expansion, aiming to triple sales and increase its store count to 116 by FY30, supported by a new distribution center in Delhi.
Recent financial filings for FY25 reveal a revenue of ₹247.24 crore, a 13.6% decrease from the previous year, with profits also declining. The gourmet foods market in India is projected for substantial growth, but profitability remains a challenge due to high operational costs and the necessity for constant innovation and prime locations. Modern Bazaar, established in 1971, currently operates 18 stores across Delhi-NCR, Noida, and Chandigarh.
