Mistral AI, a French startup dedicated to developing European AI alternatives, has successfully secured its first debt financing totaling $830 million. This significant funding is earmarked for the construction of a data center project situated in Bruyères-le-Châtel, located outside Paris. The facility is planned to house as many as 13,800 Nvidia chips.
This initiative is a key part of France's broader effort to establish AI data centers tailored for European enterprises and governments. The move comes amid growing concerns on the continent regarding dependence on US technology. Notably, five of the seven lenders involved in this financing are French, with no US banks participating.
The new Mistral AI data center is anticipated to become operational in the second quarter of 2026. It will offer 44 megawatts of capacity, utilizing its new Nvidia chips. Looking ahead, Mistral plans to expand its capacity to 200 megawatts across various European sites by the end of 2027, with another data center already announced for Sweden.
