Micron's $400B Cash Flow Forecast: Buyback Boom Ahead?
23 Jul
Summary
- UBS analyst forecasts $400 billion free cash flow by late 2028.
- Company may use cash to retire up to 40% of outstanding shares.
- Share buybacks are restricted until 2027, boosting future cash pile.

Micron (MU) stock has experienced a downturn since its June 24 earnings report. Despite this, Wall Street attention is growing, with UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri forecasting a substantial $400 billion in free cash flow through the end of calendar year 2028. This projection is significant for a company with a history of market volatility.
The analyst suggests this cash could be used to retire as much as 40% of Micron's outstanding shares. Currently, Micron faces restrictions on share buybacks, limiting them to minor repurchases to offset employee stock option dilution. This restriction means accumulated cash will remain on the books, creating a substantial "spring-loaded" catalyst for 2027 when the buyback limitations are expected to lift.
While debt reduction and expansion projects are competing uses for this cash, Micron is actively reducing its debt. Expansion spending is capped at $50 billion annually, influenced by the cyclical nature of the memory market. The primary uncertainty remains whether the projected $400 billion free cash flow will materialize, contingent on sustained high-bandwidth memory demand and maintained pricing power.
