Italy Halts Meta's AI Chatbot Terms on WhatsApp

Italy's antitrust authority, AGCM, has mandated Meta Platforms to halt contractual terms that could exclude competing AI chatbots from its WhatsApp platform. This decision stems from an ongoing investigation into Meta for alleged abuse of a dominant market position.

The AGCM stated that Meta's contractual conditions appear to restrict output and market access for AI chatbot services, potentially harming consumers. The investigation, which began in July, was expanded in November to include updated terms for WhatsApp's business platform.

This Italian action is synchronized with a parallel investigation launched by EU antitrust regulators last month over the same concerns. The European Union's stringent approach contrasts with U.S. regulation, highlighting efforts to balance tech sector growth with curbing undue influence.
