Meta's New AI Glasses: Unlock Features with Monthly Fees

Meta is introducing subscription plans for its AI-powered smart glasses, requiring users to pay for "expanded access" to advanced features. The Meta One Premium Plan will be necessary to unlock certain functionalities, including the Conversation Focus audio enhancement, which aids in loud environments. Users will receive three hours of this feature per month without a subscription, with a cap of 15 hours even for subscribers.

This move reflects a broader industry trend where companies aim to monetize customers by offering premium features through recurring payments, rather than solely recovering AI development costs. Experts suggest this strategy helps increase user base and revenue, especially as hardware is often sold at cost.

Competitors are also exploring similar models. Google and Apple are rumored to be developing smart glasses and may implement subscription tiers for advanced AI features. Google already employs subscription limits on some Pixel phone features and its Gemini chatbot, while Apple might require higher iCloud+ tiers for extensive AI photo editing.

Meta states that most users will likely not exceed the free usage limits for features like Conversation Focus. However, the company acknowledges the potential impact on users with hearing impairments and indicates it will consider user feedback to adjust usage rates.
