Meta to Spy on Employees for AI Training
22 Apr
Summary
- Meta will track employee mouse, clicks, and keystrokes.
- Screen images will be randomly captured for AI training.
- This initiative supports Meta's AI for Work program.
Meta Platforms Inc. is implementing a new initiative to monitor its employees' computer activities. This program, dubbed the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), involves tracking mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes, as well as periodically capturing screenshots. The collected data is intended to train artificial intelligence models to better understand and replicate human computer usage for work-related tasks.
The MCI is a component of Meta's extensive 'AI for Work' campaign, which seeks to integrate AI across all company operations and tools. This push for AI integration comes as Meta anticipates significant workforce reductions, with approximately 8,000 employees laid off in May 2026 and further cuts planned. The company is making a substantial financial commitment to AI development, projecting capital spending between $115 billion and $135 billion this year.
Mark Zuckerberg has previously expressed his vision of AI engineers capable of performing tasks similar to mid-level human engineers. This goal, coupled with the data-gathering from employees, fuels public concern about job security, with a majority of Americans reportedly believing AI will have a negative impact, primarily through job loss. Meta has stated the tracking will be limited to work-related applications and will not be used for performance evaluations.
