Meta Delays Controversial Terms Amidst Backlash
24 Oct
Summary
- Meta extended its commercial terms effective date to November 20.
- Concerns were raised over Meta's use of web scrapers for content.
- Publishers feared their content would train competing Meta products.

Meta has officially delayed the implementation of its updated commercial terms of use, pushing the effective date from October 30 to November 20. The company cited a need for additional time to communicate changes to its partners and stakeholders.
Previously, the terms indicated Meta's right to use web scrapers to access, index, and collect content from business accounts. This content could be used to provide, develop, improve, and train Meta's products. Following significant backlash from publishers and businesses who feared their content would be used without compensation to train AI that could compete with them, Meta revised its language to remove explicit mentions of AI training.
Despite the revision, complaints have been filed with antitrust authorities, and the News Media Alliance sent an open letter demanding the withdrawal of the terms. Meta has stated it will further explain its web crawler usage and emphasize that content owners can utilize robots.txt to signal preferences and prevent indexing, although some AI crawlers have been reported to disregard these instructions.
