New £2.7m Traveller Site Plans Emerge
4 Aug
Summary
- Medway Council proposes £2.7m for a new traveller site.
- The site will initially have eight pitches for caravans.
- Families previously challenged council removal attempts successfully.

Medway Council's cabinet is set to review plans for a new traveller site, with an estimated cost of nearly £2.7 million. The proposed development at Wigmore Coach Park includes site clearance, landscaping, a play area, and essential utility connections. Initially, the site will offer eight pitches for touring caravans, with provisions for expansion to accommodate an additional six pitches on nearby land.
This initiative comes after families residing at the site successfully contested the council's removal efforts. Last May, Canterbury County Court ruled in favor of the 15 adults and 14 children who had been living there since July 2023, affirming their human rights. This decision paved the way for the planning permission of a permanent site, viewed as a significant victory for the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller community.
