Medicine Prices Rise 0.6% Amidst Supply Chain Fears
2 Apr
Summary
- Over 760 medicines saw a 0.6% price increase effective April 1, 2026.
- Raw material price hikes may trigger further increases.
- Retailers fear price escalation will burden middle and lower classes.

As of April 1, 2026, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has implemented a 0.6% price increase for more than 760 essential medicines. This annual revision applies to drugs on the National List of Essential Medicines. While this increase is modest compared to previous years, concerns are mounting within the medicine retail sector.
Retailers are particularly worried about the provision allowing further price adjustments based on fluctuations in raw material costs. Recent disruptions in the West Asian pharmaceutical supply chain have reportedly doubled the prices of some raw materials, with paracetamol prices alone seeing a significant jump.
This volatility has led manufacturers to warn of potential price hikes and supply shortages. Medicine retailers fear these escalating costs will disproportionately affect the middle and lower-middle classes, potentially creating financial hardships.
