US Finalizes Medicare Payouts: A Win for Insurers
7 Apr
Summary
- Medicare Advantage payment rates increased by 2.48% for next year.
- This rise is a significant increase from the initial near-flat proposal.
- Insurers like UnitedHealth, Humana, and CVS saw stock value surge.

In a significant shift, the U.S. government has finalized an average rate increase of 2.48% for Medicare Advantage plans managed by private insurers. This decision, announced on Monday, represents a substantial upward revision from the near-flat 0.09% proposal initially put forth in January for next year's payments. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services indicated that this finalized rate is expected to lead to an average net increase of over $13 billion in additional Medicare Advantage payments to plans in 2027.
This outcome provides considerable relief for major health insurers such as UnitedHealth, Humana, and CVS. These companies had experienced billions in losses in market value following the less favorable January proposal. While UnitedHealth and CVS possess diversified business lines that can mitigate fluctuations in Medicare Advantage revenue, Humana's business model remains more concentrated in these specific plans for older adults. The positive market reaction was evident as shares of UnitedHealth, CVS, and Humana collectively rose between 8% and 14% in extended trading following the announcement.
