26 May
Summary
- Maruti Suzuki implements austerity measures to conserve fuel.
- Work from home and travel optimization are key strategies.
- Company aligns with PM Modi's call for efficiency and reduced expenditure.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) has launched a comprehensive set of austerity and efficiency measures in response to the ongoing West Asia war and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for fuel conservation. These initiatives are designed to reduce foreign exchange expenditure and minimize the use of petroleum products. The measures focus on four core areas: work from home, travel optimization, sustainable commute practices, and energy conservation.
Operationally feasible remote working arrangements are being implemented to cut down on commute-related fuel consumption. Foreign travel is strictly limited to critical business needs, while domestic travel is minimized, with virtual meetings becoming the preferred method for engagements. Employees are encouraged to adopt carpooling and public transport, and offices are directed to optimize energy usage for air conditioning, fans, and lighting. These steps underscore MSIL's commitment to efficient operations and national austerity goals.
The company's move echoes Prime Minister Modi's earlier appeal on May 10, urging a return to Covid-era practices like WFH and virtual meetings amidst the energy crunch. While the government clarified this was an appeal, MSIL is actively communicating these directives to both its employees and business partners, signaling a proactive stance on economic and environmental stewardship. This initiative also comes as MSIL plans to increase vehicle prices by up to Rs 30,000 from June 2026 due to inflationary pressures.
