Stock Rally Needs 'Rates Relief' to Sustain
17 Apr
Summary
- Market rally needs central bank pivot to rate cuts for momentum.
- Equity rebound driven by technical factors and tech stock exposure.
- Elevated oil prices and lagging credit markets contrast with stocks.

A significant stock market rally, propelling the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 to unprecedented levels, is showing signs of needing central bank intervention to continue its upward trajectory. Christian Mueller-Glissmann, head of asset allocation research at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., stated that the current recovery phase is swift and partly driven by technical market adjustments.
Mueller-Glissmann explained that for this market recovery to persist, a shift back towards interest rate cuts by central banks is necessary. He noted that despite the impressive gains in equities, oil prices remain high, and credit markets have not kept pace with stock performance. The outperformance of equities is also attributed to a greater weighting in technology stocks, which continue to report strong financial results.
