The Malaysian automotive market demonstrated robust growth in June 2026, with new vehicle sales climbing 32% to 69,785 units compared to the previous year. This performance marked a recovery from a 12% decline in May, which was impacted by fewer working days. For the first six months of 2026, the overall vehicle market expanded by 3% to 385,353 units, primarily driven by a 4% rise in passenger vehicle sales.
During the first half of 2026, domestic brands saw a 9% increase in sales, largely due to Proton's strong performance. Conversely, sales of overseas brands experienced a slight 2% decrease. Production figures for the period showed a modest 1% rise to 356,946 units.
A significant trend observed is the dramatic surge in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, which leaped 85% to 31,740 units in the first half of the year. Proton led this segment with 13,530 sales, followed by BYD and Chery. The Malaysian Automotive Association has consequently raised its full-year 2026 total market forecast to 800,000 units.
