Maharashtra's cabinet has approved the Maharashtra Traffic Police E-Challan Amnesty Scheme 2026. This measure offers a significant one-time concession of up to 20% on accumulated traffic violation penalties, providing relief to millions of vehicle owners.
The state faces a substantial backlog, with unpaid traffic fines reaching Rs 5,724 crore. Since 2019, 12.8 crore e-challans totaling Rs 8,678 crore were issued, but over half remain unsettled.
This amnesty scheme aims to encourage voluntary settlement of dues and ease the burden on the enforcement system. It is expected to boost recovery of pending fines and improve overall adherence to traffic regulations statewide.
Industry representatives have welcomed the decision, noting it provides much-needed relief to transporters facing increasing operational costs and compliance demands. Additional proposals for road-safety awareness sessions are also under consideration.
