Maharashtra FDA Crackdown: Hygiene Lapses Found in Elite Eateries

The Maharashtra FDA has launched an extensive inspection campaign, led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, targeting food safety and hygiene violations across the state. This initiative has brought to light significant shortcomings, including pest control issues and improper storage, even at well-regarded eateries in Mumbai. The enforcement drive has extended to restaurants, milk suppliers, manufacturers, and drug businesses.

This statewide campaign has seen over 1,131 inspections, leading to the seizure of food stocks valued at approximately Rs 50 crore. More than 1.6 lakh liters of allegedly adulterated milk were confiscated, and the licenses of 56 restaurants have been suspended. Commissioner Mundhe, known for his unyielding approach to administrative enforcement, emphasizes that food safety compliance is paramount for public health.

Mundhe, an IAS officer, took charge of the FDA on May 25 and has prioritized addressing issues like adulteration and businesses operating without proper licenses. He has also established a toll-free number for public complaints, which has garnered a strong response, indicating widespread concern over food quality and safety.

Mundhe's administrative career is characterized by frequent transfers, yet his commitment to rigorous enforcement remains steadfast. He views these changes as opportunities to effect positive change. Beyond his official duties, Mundhe has also shared personal philosophies on embracing scientific thinking and environmental consciousness, and has advised young people to develop their own identities rather than passively following trends.
