Maharashtra Expands 'Blue Category' for Green Growth
29 Jan
Summary
- MPCB adds eight services to 'Blue Category' for circular economy.
- Blue Category fast-tracks approvals for essential environmental facilities.
- New inclusions aim to boost circular economy and attract investors.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has broadened the recently established 'Blue Category' by incorporating eight additional services vital for the circular economy. This category, initially introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in February 2025, is designed to streamline processes and hasten clearances for essential environmental facilities. The Blue Category complements existing classifications based on pollution potential and specifically serves facilities like waste processing and sewage treatment. Initially, it included municipal solid waste processing, waste-to-energy plants, and sewage treatment facilities, all benefiting from simplified consents and quicker approvals as part of the 'Ease of Doing Business' initiative. MPCB's expanded list includes plastic waste recycling, PET bottle recycling, and e-waste dismantling. This move is anticipated to invigorade circular economy operations in Maharashtra and draw investment to allied sectors. Furthermore, eligible units will receive an extended consent validity period. A proposal for these additions has been submitted to the CPCB for final approval, driven by Board chairman Siddhesh Kadam and informed by a policy study.
