30 Aug
Summary
- £200 million project to directly link M54 eastbound to M6.
- Work includes vegetation clearing and compound building.
- Five-year project to also upgrade M54 junction one and M6 junction 11.

Construction work has commenced on a £200 million project designed to establish a direct connection between the eastbound M54 and the M6. This initiative by National Highways is set to transform local travel, with preparation activities including vegetation clearing and the establishment of two substantial construction compounds, alongside temporary roadways. Diversions and closures are scheduled to begin next month, marking the official start of operations.
The project, which received final government approval last year, is projected to span five years for completion. Beyond the creation of the new link road, National Highways also plans to upgrade M54 junction one and M6 junction 11. These enhancements are expected to yield quicker journey times and reroute traffic away from minor roads through Featherstone, Hilton, and Shareshill.
Currently, only traffic heading west on the M54 benefits from a direct link to the M6. Eastbound M54 traffic must currently use the A460 before accessing the M6 at junction 11. The new road is anticipated to provide a significant boost to economic growth across Wolverhampton, Telford, Shrewsbury, Cannock, and Tamworth, a benefit welcomed by local authorities. The area surrounding the new route is earmarked for future economic and industrial development.
