Lululemon Stock Plunges on Weakened Outlook
5 Sep
Summary
- Company slashed full-year outlook due to declining brand sentiment.
- North America and China revenues saw significant year-over-year drops.
- Gross margin improved, largely due to IEIPA refunds received.
Lululemon Athletica Inc. is facing a significant downturn, with its stock trading sharply lower following a downward revision of its full-year financial projections. This adjustment comes as the company grapples with diminishing brand sentiment and reduced customer traffic, most notably in its key markets of North America and China.
The latest financial report revealed a 4% year-over-year revenue decrease to $2.4 billion, with comparable sales dropping by 10%. North America saw an 8% revenue decline, while China Mainland revenue experienced a 2% fall on a constant-currency basis, despite a 4% reported increase.
Management indicated that negative commentary on social media and other channels has notably impacted traffic and sales momentum. This trend is particularly pronounced in China, where recent negative sentiment has significantly affected brand perception and customer visits across both physical stores and digital platforms.
While gross margin expanded to 60.5%, this improvement was substantially boosted by IEIPA refunds, which accounted for 560 basis points. However, product margins fell, and tariffs negatively impacted gross margin by 160 basis points, excluding the refund benefit. Efficiency initiatives provided a boost, but markdowns and fixed-cost deleverage exerted downward pressure.
Amidst these challenges, Lululemon expanded its retail footprint, ending the quarter with 825 stores after adding 41 net new locations. The company ended the period with $1.4 billion in cash and $1.7 billion in inventory, which was down 1% in dollars and 7% in units. Share repurchases also continued, with approximately 2.7 million shares bought back.
