LPG Crisis Hits Tamil Nadu Hotels
11 Mar
Summary
- Restaurants in Tamil Nadu face critical LPG shortage, stocks last days.
- West Asia conflict impacts commercial LPG supply, threatening operations.
- Hotels seek CM's intervention, consider induction stoves as alternative.

Restaurants throughout Tamil Nadu are facing a precarious future due to an acute shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing West Asia conflict. Current stocks are projected to last merely one to two days, prompting some establishments to curtail their offerings. The Tamil Nadu and Chennai Hotels Association has formally requested Chief Minister M K Stalin's intervention to address the crisis.
Association representatives met with the Chief Minister on March 10, 2026, to explain the unsustainable operational circumstances. He assured them of his commitment to raising the issue with the Prime Minister and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry. Hotels have deemed the use of wood or coal infeasible, citing infrastructure limitations and pollution concerns. An alternative discussed involves transitioning to commercial induction cooking, which could also involve paying GST charges instead of current peak hour electricity surcharges.
