LPG Shortage Looms: Smaller Refills Proposed
23 Mar
Summary
- Ministry official denies plan for smaller LPG refills.
- Companies consider 10 kg LPG in 14.2 kg cylinders.
- Domestic stocks fall and imports shrink due to Iran war.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has denied reports of state-run oil companies considering supplying 10 kg of LPG within 14.2 kg cylinders. This potential measure was reportedly aimed at conserving limited domestic LPG stocks, which are falling, while imports are also shrinking due to the ongoing Iran war.
An executive indicated that the intention behind a 10 kg refill would be to sustain households for nearly a month, thereby allowing available LPG volumes to be distributed more widely during the current supply crunch. However, Sharma's denial suggests this conservation strategy is not currently being pursued by the government.
