UK Probes Live Nation's Concert Monopoly

The UK's competition regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), is actively considering a market investigation into the live music sector. This potential probe follows outreach to industry figures, signaling preparations for formal scrutiny of Live Nation Entertainment.

This UK inquiry mirrors a recent antitrust setback for Live Nation in the United States. In April, a New York federal jury determined that Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster operated an illegal monopoly, resulting in overcharges to consumers. Live Nation has stated its intent to contest this verdict.

The prospect of a UK investigation was amplified by a report from the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee. Published in May, the report urged the CMA to launch a full market investigation before the end of 2026, citing evidence of a 'climate of fear' within the industry.

Live Nation, the world's largest concert promoter and owner of Ticketmaster, rejected the committee's conclusions. A spokesperson claimed the report contained inaccurate data and unsupported findings, asserting the company operates in a highly competitive market. The CMA previously issued a warning to Ticketmaster in July 2025 regarding misleading ticket sales for an Oasis reunion.

Emma Cochrane of the CMA indicated in June 2025 that a market investigation could take 18 to 24 months and might include measures such as breaking up a business. Live Nation reportedly holds stakes in 23 UK venues and 26 festivals, though the company claims to control less than 5% of UK festivals.
