Shares of South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1 experienced a significant surge on the Seoul stock exchange, reportedly following news that Gulf nations are considering expanding their orders for the company's missile interceptor systems. These potential new deals aim to bolster defenses against Iranian missile threats.
Reports indicate that the United Arab Emirates has inquired about acquiring additional interceptors from LIG Nex1. Furthermore, Qatar has expressed interest in placing a new order for these missile defense systems. Additionally, three Gulf countries are reportedly requesting accelerated delivery of previously planned shipments.
This surge in demand for South Korean defense products is occurring amidst heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The UAE's defense ministry recently reported intercepting a substantial number of Iranian ballistic missiles, underscoring the regional need for robust air defense capabilities.
LIG Nex1 has previously exported its M-SAM II (Cheongung II) missile systems to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq in deals valued at over 12 trillion won ($8.2 billion) between 2022 and 2024. The company's willingness to localize production and transfer technology is seen as a key factor in aligning with Gulf defense objectives.
