LG Energy Solution Powers Up Michigan Battery Plant

LG Energy Solution (LGES) has initiated production at its new battery plant located in Lansing, Michigan. This facility is designed to achieve an annual battery-making capacity exceeding 35 GWh upon reaching full scale. The Lansing plant marks LGES's second manufacturing site in Michigan, complementing its existing facility in Holland. It will manufacture both lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems (ESS) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells tailored for electric vehicles (EVs).
The NMC cells produced will be supplied to Toyota for its upcoming EV models, including the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV. Concurrently, the ESS cells will be integrated by LGES Vertech into systems for utility-scale storage, grid applications, and commercial use. DTE Energy is among the utilities set to utilize batteries from this plant for future ESS projects. LGES has invested over $2 billion in the Lansing facility since 2022, currently employing approximately 900 individuals, with plans to expand to 1,700 employees at full production.
This expansion underscores LGES's commitment to North America, where it is targeting over 50 GWh of LFP cell capacity by the end of 2026. This capacity will be distributed across its wholly-owned plants in Michigan and Ontario, alongside joint-venture facilities in Ohio and Tennessee. By the close of 2026, an estimated 80% of LGES's global ESS capacity is projected to be located in North America, reinforcing the region's critical role in the company's global strategy.
