Lake Park Faces High-Rise Development Clash
31 Aug
Summary
- Two 16-story mixed-use complexes proposed for downtown Lake Park.
- Residents voice concerns over small-town character and traffic.
- A historic building's designation is debated amid development.

Lake Park is considering proposals for two 16-story mixed-use developments, marking a significant architectural shift for the town. The "Kelsey on Park" and "Residences at 10th & Park" projects are slated for the west end of downtown, introducing a substantial number of new residences and commercial spaces.
These developments, if approved, would become Lake Park's second-tallest buildings, comparable to existing high-rises in nearby Singer Island. "The Residences at 10th & Park" received a positive recommendation from the Planning & Zoning Board in June 2024 and awaits a Town Commission vote, while "The Kelsey on Park" is still under review.
Concerns among residents and town staff focus on the proposed developments' scale, density waivers, and potential negative impacts on the neighborhood's character and traffic. Some residents advocate for smaller structures, citing the risk of altering Lake Park's small-town appeal.
Adding complexity, one of the developers, The Alder at Lake Park LLC, is seeking to demolish several properties, including a historic building. Despite initial rejections to remove its historic designation, the developer has reached a settlement allowing demolition of other properties while preserving the historic structure.
Developers express a desire to revitalize the downtown area, aiming for a more pedestrian-friendly environment. However, community groups have organized opposition, emphasizing the desire to maintain Lake Park's distinct, small-town atmosphere rather than emulate larger, urban centers.
