4 Oct
Summary
- Kudankulam NPP's third unit is nearing operation and expected next year.
- Advanced nuclear fuel enables an extended 18-month cycle for operating units.
- Rosatom has achieved 50% localization at the Kudankulam site.

The third unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), India's largest nuclear facility, is anticipated to begin operations by next year, significantly boosting energy supply. This flagship project between Russia and India features operational units 1 and 2 already exceeding their designed capacity.
Rosatom, a key partner, is supplying advanced nuclear fuel for the VVER-1000 reactors. This enables an extended 18-month fuel cycle, reducing refueling outages and increasing electricity generation efficiency for the existing units.
Construction of units 4, 5, and 6 is progressing well, set to meet a substantial portion of electricity demands for Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. Rosatom has also achieved 50% localization at the Kudankulam site, with plans to extend this model to new Indian companies in the nuclear sector.
