Giant Eagle, founded in 1931 and previously family-owned, is a substantial employer in Ohio, with approximately 17,400 employees statewide. The company reported $9 billion in annual sales. Kroger, the nation's largest supermarket chain, operates nearly 2,700 stores across 35 states and employs over 400,000 individuals. Both companies anticipate making limited store divestitures for regulatory reasons as part of the agreement.
