Korea's Aging Crisis: Wealth Hoarding Hampers Economy

South Korea's economy is showing signs of a "K-shaped cycle," characterized by thriving corporate balance sheets alongside persistently soft private consumption. Economists point to the nation's accelerating demographic shift as a primary cause.

With a fertility rate of 0.8 births per woman, far below the replacement level, and 20% of the population already over 65, Korea faces a rapidly shrinking working-age population to support its elderly.

Compounding this challenge, retired Koreans exhibit a unique saving behavior. Unlike in many developed economies, they tend to maintain high savings rates even in retirement, with those in their sixties saving 37% of their income.

Furthermore, over 60% of Korean household wealth is concentrated in real estate, leaving retirees with limited liquid financial assets. This asset-rich, cash-poor situation restricts their ability to fund consumption from savings.

Goldman Sachs models suggest this aging trend could significantly reduce consumption growth, potentially shaving up to 25 basis points annually over the next decade.

While Korean officials have introduced incentives to encourage higher birth rates, such as marriage grants and newborn subsidies, these measures are unlikely to offer immediate relief due to the long lead time before new generations enter the workforce.

Economists propose immediate solutions, including enabling retirees to access their housing wealth and ensuring better distribution of profits from the country's tech sector to stimulate domestic spending.
