9 May
Summary
- Kongsberg Maritime will equip four new US Coast Guard cutters with Promas propulsion.
- The Promas system offers significant efficiency savings and extended range.
- The new vessels replace older cutters, ensuring long-term offshore capability.

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a significant contract by Austal USA to provide its Promas propulsion system for four upcoming United States Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC). This initiative is part of a larger program expected to encompass up to 25 new vessels. These OPCs are designed to replace the Coast Guard's current medium endurance cutters, bolstering long-term offshore operational effectiveness.
The Promas system uniquely combines rudder and controllable pitch propeller functions. This integration optimizes a vessel's hydrodynamics, leading to enhanced efficiency and thrust while reducing energy consumption. Kongsberg Maritime's commitment extends to supplying steering gear, rudders, fin stabilizers, and tunnel thrusters for these critical new ships.
According to Kongsberg Maritime CEO Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, the Promas systems typically offer around 6% efficiency savings. This improvement is vital for extending patrol range, particularly during extended missions. The OPC vessels will measure 360 feet in length, with a displacement of 3,700 long tons. They are designed for long-range patrol capabilities, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 22.2 knots and a range of 9,050 nautical miles at 14 knots.
