Kolkata Sweets Shops Report 20% Sales Surge During Festive Season

In the lead-up to the 2025 Diwali-Kali Puja celebrations, Kolkata's sweets shops witnessed a remarkable surge in sales, reporting a nearly 20% increase compared to the previous year. From the bustling lanes of north Kolkata to the upscale neighborhoods of the south, queues outside iconic sweets shops bore testament to the city's unwavering love for mishti during the festive season.

Gift hampers brimming with an array of traditional sweets, including motichoor laddoos, kaju katlis, coconut barfis, sandesh, and milk cakes, were in high demand, with many retailers running out of stock due to the overwhelming response. Customers not only purchased sweets for gifting but also to indulge with their families and friends, reflecting a growing appetite for a variety of sweet treats.

The sales spike was not limited to traditional Bengali sweets, as fusion varieties also saw a surge in popularity. Popular establishments such as Bhim Chandra Nag, Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy, Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick, and Mithai were inundated with orders, with many customers opting for assorted boxes featuring an array of sweet delicacies.

The festive cheer extended beyond just sweets, as dry fruit sales also saw a 13-15% rise over the previous year. Retailers reported that a significant number of customers opted for dry fruit hampers, either as standalone gifts or to complement the traditional sweets.
