The Union Cabinet has approved the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme, a significant initiative with a total outlay of Rs 1,856.67 crore set to run from 2026 to 2033-34. This scheme is designed to enhance India's competitiveness in the global sports goods market.
The plan includes the development of dedicated Sports Goods Manufacturing Zones (SGMZs). These zones will foster cluster-based manufacturing by bringing together manufacturers, suppliers, and testing facilities. The scheme also focuses on attracting investment and expanding domestic capacity, with a budget of Rs 1,130 crore for these interventions.
Furthermore, the initiative will support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by upgrading existing clusters and developing common facilities. An allocation of Rs 105 crore is designated for manufacturers seeking international certifications. Research and innovation will be bolstered through Centres of Excellence and collaboration with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation.
