Kerala has become the first state in India and the second region in the world to eradicate extreme poverty, defined as the inability to afford even the most basic necessities such as food, shelter, healthcare, and education. This milestone has been reached through concerted efforts by the state government, as confirmed by Local Self-Government Minister MB Rajesh and Education Minister V Sivankutty.
