Kenya's Coast: Tourism Goldmine Unlocked by Air Access

The Kenyan Coast, a world-class tourism destination, is underperforming due to insufficient air access to Moi International Airport.

An economic assessment by the Mombasa Investment Corporation reveals that expanding direct international flights could unlock billions of shillings, create tens of thousands of jobs, and significantly boost government revenues.

Even four additional international flights per week, operating for 36 weeks annually, could result in over 31,000 extra visitors. This influx would generate approximately Sh12.1 billion in economic output, support more than 17,000 jobs, and yield about Sh1.7 billion in tax revenues.

This connectivity is vital for national economic development, impacting various sectors from hospitality to agriculture and professional services. Visitors arriving at Moi International Airport travel across Kenya, strengthening the entire regional and national economy.

Competitors like Morocco and Egypt have aggressively expanded international connectivity. Kenya must facilitate more direct international services to Moi Airport and pursue underserved markets to meet its goal of 5.5 million international visitors by 2028.

Achieving an aspirational target of one million annual international visitors to the Coast within three to five years could lead to an estimated $3 billion in annual GDP impact and over 550,000 jobs.

Kenya should establish a clear process for approving international services, adopt a facilitative framework for carriers, and create a joint national-county air access development platform.

Developing international convention infrastructure also requires corresponding air access. Mombasa county is prepared to collaborate, but aviation policy remains a national responsibility. Unlocking Moi International Airport requires courageous policy decisions to realize its immense potential.
