Kala Academy's Moisture Meltdown: Building Faces Durability Crisis
8 Jan
Summary
- Serious structural, waterproofing, and drainage failures noted at Kala Academy.
- IIT Madras inspection revealed ongoing water ingress and potential structural distress.
- Over Rs 50 crore spent on renovation of the landmark building.

The Kala Academy complex in Panaji is facing significant structural and waterproofing failures, according to a task force committee. Chronic water ingress and moisture-related deterioration have raised serious concerns about the building's long-term durability and safety.
An inspection by IIT Madras on September 23, 2025, confirmed these issues. Critical problems were identified in the main auditorium, including a sump tank pump operating during high tide, indicating persistent water entry. Electrical wiring and junction boxes in damp areas showed prolonged moisture exposure, contributing to poor indoor air quality and possible mold growth.
Cracks observed in beams and columns near the stage and catwalk areas suggest potential structural distress. These findings emerge despite the state government having already spent over Rs 50 crore on the renovation of this landmark Charles Correa-designed building, built in the 1980s.
