Jolla, a company known for its Linux-based Sailfish OS, has unveiled a successor to its original Jolla Phone, branding it as the "European phone." This move taps into growing skepticism towards US digital platforms. The new device, costing 649 euros, boasts a Scandinavian design and has already surpassed 10,000 preorders since its December 2025 preview, with shipments slated for June 2026.
Following a challenging period that included a near bankruptcy and a pivot to licensing Sailfish OS, Jolla has re-entered the hardware market. The successful Jolla C2 Community Phone, developed with a Turkish partner in 2024, paved the way for this new handset. Unlike its predecessor, the latest Jolla Phone is entirely manufactured in Salo, Finland, a nod to the region's former prominence in mobile production.
The company aims to meet European demand for sovereign technology and a reduced reliance on Big Tech. Sourcing components globally, the phone features a MediaTek chip from Taiwan, Sony camera sensors, and RAM from South Korea. This strategic approach allows for a leaner operation compared to a decade ago, according to CEO Sami Pienimäki.
