Reliance Jio Turns Your Old PC into an AI Machine

Reliance Jio's JioPC cloud service, initially launched in July 2025, is now available to any internet user in India, not just its broadband subscribers. This move aims to extend the life of older computers, making them capable of running modern AI applications without requiring hardware upgrades. The service provides users with a virtual PC streamed from Jio's cloud, offering configurations up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage.

Starting at approximately $11 for two months, JioPC presents a subscription-based model that challenges the traditional PC hardware replacement cycle. This strategy is particularly relevant as PC replacement cycles in India have lengthened. Analysts suggest JioPC could foster a market where users pay for computing capability rather than invest in new hardware, though it is unlikely to fully replace conventional PCs. It offers a cost-effective tier for students and households for whom a new AI-capable PC was previously out of reach.

However, Jio faces challenges in convincing Indian consumers, who traditionally prefer owning hardware, to adopt a subscription model that requires a stable internet connection. This reliance on connectivity could be a hurdle in smaller towns. Furthermore, JioPC's "AI-ready" claim may differ from the hardware-focused AI PCs gaining traction, as it lacks dedicated on-device AI accelerators. The success of JioPC hinges on its ability to establish cloud computing as a daily utility users are willing to pay for.
