Jio BlackRock Shifts Strategy, Embraces Distributors

Jio BlackRock Asset Management is altering its product distribution strategy, less than a year after its inception in June last year. The asset manager, a joint venture between Reliance Industries' Jio Financial and BlackRock, will now partner with distributors. This marks a significant shift from its initial direct-only sales approach.

According to managing director and chief executive, Sid Swaminathan, the decision to onboard distributors stems from recognizing the diverse Indian market. He stated that a segment of investors requires additional support, which can be provided through advisors or mutual fund distributors. Initially, the firm will offer specialized investment funds (SIFs) via these intermediaries, with plans to extend this model to its mutual fund schemes later.

Swaminathan refuted claims that this strategy change was due to underperformance in direct sales. He highlighted that Jio BlackRock's retail business boasts 11 lakh investors, with 20% being new to mutual funds. Furthermore, 40% of their retail assets under management originate from B30 towns, contributing ₹4,000 crore in retail AUM out of overall assets totaling ₹15,000 crore.

Jio BlackRock and Zerodha MF remain the only entities in India's 51-member mutual fund industry to exclusively offer direct plans. Direct plans are sold without intermediaries, leading to lower expense ratios for investors. Regular plans, which include commissions for distributors, typically have higher costs.
