16 Mar
Summary
- JD.com's Joybuy marketplace expands into six European countries.
- Same-day delivery is a key selling point for shoppers.
- The platform aims to compete directly with Amazon.

JD.com has officially launched its Joybuy online marketplace across six European nations, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. This expansion marks a substantial effort to grow its international presence and directly compete with market leader Amazon.
The new platform will offer a wide array of products, spanning technology, appliances, beauty, homeware, and groceries. Joybuy is also establishing dedicated brand stores for popular labels such as L'Oreal, Braun, and DeLonghi.
A primary focus for Joybuy is fast delivery, promising same-day service for orders placed by 11 a.m. in major urban areas. This ambitious delivery service will cover over 15 million households from its launch. To attract customers, Joybuy is introducing a subscription service, 'JoyPlus,' offering unlimited free delivery at an introductory price of 3.99 euros or pounds per month, positioning itself as a direct competitor to Amazon Prime.
This initiative is part of a broader trend of Chinese retailers expanding globally to find new growth avenues amidst intense domestic competition and weaker consumer demand. JD.com's move into Europe follows its recent exploration of potential acquisitions, including bids for UK retailers Currys and talks for Argos, though these did not materialize.
