Japan Visa Fees Skyrocket for Most Travelers
27 Jun
Summary
- Japan's visa fees will increase fivefold on July 1, 2026.
- Indian nationals' visa fees remain unchanged at Rs 1,300 total.
- Most other nationalities will see a significant price jump.

Effective July 1, 2026, Japan will implement a substantial increase in visa fees, marking the first adjustment in approximately 50 years. For most foreign nationals requiring pre-arrival clearance, single-entry visas will rise from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000, and multiple-entry visas from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000. This represents a fivefold increase across the board.
Indian nationals are largely unaffected by these changes. Those applying through the Embassy of Japan in India will continue to pay Rs 500 for single or multiple-entry visas, with the total cost, including service charges, remaining at Rs 1,300. This contrasts with travelers from countries like China, the Philippines, and Vietnam, for whom single-entry visas will now cost around Rs 8,650.
The Japanese government cited the need to align fees with administrative costs and manage a growing foreign population, which exceeded 4 million by the end of 2025. The weakened Japanese yen also contributed to the decision. Revenue from these fee increases will support administrative expenses.
