Japan's Q2 GDP Slows Amidst Global Uncertainty
17 Aug
Summary
- Japan's second quarter GDP saw 0.3% growth quarter-on-quarter.
- Annualized growth reached 1.1%, falling short of expectations.
- Strong exports, aided by a weak yen, countered weak domestic demand.

Japan's economy experienced a moderate expansion of 0.3% in the second quarter, resulting in an annualized growth rate of 1.1%. This performance did not meet the anticipated 2% growth, largely attributed to subdued domestic demand. Despite these challenges, exports emerged as the primary engine of growth, bolstered by a depreciating yen.
The Bank of Japan recently revised its GDP growth outlook for the fiscal year ending March 2027 to 0.6%, a slight increase from its previous forecast. The central bank acknowledged that while growth is expected to continue at a moderate pace, it will likely decelerate. Factors such as high crude oil prices stemming from Middle Eastern conflicts pose potential headwinds.
Conversely, government measures to mitigate oil price impacts on households and a surge in global AI-related demand are anticipated to provide some counterbalance. Many Japanese firms are integral to the semiconductor supply chain, potentially benefiting from this increased demand.
