Japan's financial sector is experiencing a surge of innovation as major banking and financial groups prepare to launch yen-denominated stablecoins. This initiative follows recent legal frameworks established for such digital currencies, creating a competitive landscape for emerging players.
SBI Group has officially entered the race, announcing its intention to debut a new stablecoin in the second quarter of 2026. This follows earlier commitments from the country's three megabanks – Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho – who have been developing their own stablecoin projects.
The planned stablecoin by SBI, developed in partnership with Startale Group, is designed as an institutional settlement rail. It seeks to offer a much-needed yen-denominated alternative in a global stablecoin market heavily concentrated with U.S. dollar assets, targeting foreign exchange and tokenized asset flows.
