Japan's domestic new vehicle market demonstrated significant growth in July 2026, with sales climbing 6.8% year-on-year to 417,163 units. This expansion follows a period of decline, signaling a positive turn for the automotive sector.
Passenger vehicles led the surge, with sales increasing by 7.7% to 351,462 units. Truck sales also saw a modest rise of 1.4%, reaching 64,481 units, while bus and coach sales nearly doubled.
The market's recovery in the last three months is linked to the discontinuation of the prefectural Environmental Performance Tax and manufacturers fulfilling order backlogs. Improved consumer sentiment, boosted by household income growth, has also played a crucial role.
Year-to-date figures for the first seven months of 2026 show a 2.5% increase in vehicle sales to 2,804,353 units. Toyota remained the market leader, with a 6.4% sales rise driven by commercial vehicle demand.
Looking ahead, light vehicle sales are projected to remain largely stable at 4.52 million units for 2026, with a subsequent decline anticipated in 2027.
