Italy's public transportation sector has seen a significant advancement with the launch of its first integrated transit EMV contactless payment system. Developed by Conduent Transportation in collaboration with Brescia Mobilità and Arriva Italia, this innovative solution allows passengers to use a single ticket for travel across both urban and extra-urban networks. Travelers can purchase these tickets using contactless debit or credit cards, or through NFC-enabled digital wallets.
The system automatically calculates the correct fare based on the journey undertaken and supports multi-passenger ticketing, enabling one card to cover multiple fares in a single transaction. This integration marks a pioneering step, serving as the first EMV system integration between two public transport operators in Italy and functioning as a shared service hub.
Conduent enhanced its EMV solution with a Tokenizer for data protection and an Orchestrator to manage secure payment processes. This initiative represents a major stride in digitalizing public transit, enhancing passenger experience, and creating a scalable model that can be expanded to wider geographical areas.
