SIP Stoppages Rise as Equity Market Disappoints
2 Jun
Summary
- SIP discontinuations exceed new registrations for two months.
- New investor additions slow to slowest pace since June 2023.
- Low equity returns cause investor dissatisfaction and exits.

After two years of underperforming equity markets, a noticeable segment of retail investors is reconsidering their stock market involvement. Data from April 2026 shows that Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) discontinuations have continued to outnumber new registrations, maintaining a stoppage ratio of 101%. This trend, while concerning for domestic investment flows, has not yet critically destabilized the market due to ongoing SIP support.
The pace of fresh investor additions has also moderated, with April 2026 recording the slowest monthly growth in new mutual fund investors since June 2023. The total investor base reached 61.7 million, but the annual addition rate has declined compared to the previous year. This slowdown, coupled with rising SIP stoppages, signals growing discontent among investors who are disappointed by equity scheme returns that have not met their high expectations.
Many investors entered the market attracted by past high returns, particularly in the small-cap space. However, recent performance, such as a 2.56% loss in Nifty 50 SIPs and a 0.83% gain in Nifty 500 SIPs over the past two years, has led to disappointment. This has prompted some investors to seek alternative investment avenues, a natural market phenomenon driven by return expectations.
