Summary
- Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund is actively buying local stocks.
- MSCI proposed downgrading Indonesia from emerging-market status.
- The fund aims to create 'economic value,' not just commercial returns.

Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, is actively stepping in to stabilize the nation's stock market amid global scrutiny. The fund's chief investment officer, Pandu Sjahrir, stated their focus is on supporting fundamentally sound Indonesian businesses. This initiative comes as MSCI proposed downgrading Indonesia from emerging-market status, a change that could impact foreign investment.
The benchmark Jakarta Composite Index has seen a significant decline, highlighting the need for such stabilizing measures. Danantara's strategy prioritizes creating "economic value" rather than solely commercial returns, aiming to act as a multiplier for the economy. The fund operates through four arms, including asset management, investment management, a development fund for infrastructure, and a new unit to centralize natural resource exports.
Danantara is also investing in international ventures, such as a $250 million stake in HighPeak Energy, to acquire knowledge in new technologies like shale extraction. The fund aims to transfer this expertise back to Indonesia. With approximately 500 employees, Danantara seeks to attract top human capital and facilitate knowledge transfer for the nation's benefit.
