Indonesia's automotive sector witnessed a remarkable 33% increase in new vehicle sales during June 2026, reaching 77,550 units. This surge follows a period of weak sales in the previous year and signifies a strong market rebound. The expansion was primarily driven by robust demand for light and medium-duty commercial vehicles, alongside a significant uptick in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales.
For the first six months of 2026, the Indonesian vehicle market grew by 16% to 436,564 units. Sales of light passenger vehicles rose by over 9%, while commercial vehicle sales saw a substantial 39% increase. BEVs experienced phenomenal growth, more than doubling their sales from the prior year, supported by government tax incentives and the increasing popularity of Chinese brands.
This positive market trend is underpinned by improving economic conditions, with GDP growth accelerating to 5.6% in the first quarter of 2026. Private consumption also saw accelerated growth, buoyed by strong consumer sentiment. Leading manufacturers like Toyota and Daihatsu reported increased sales, while BYD emerged as a significant player, securing fifth place with substantial sales growth.
In terms of production and exports, overall vehicle production rose by 11% year-to-date, and fully assembled vehicle exports increased by nearly 8%. GlobalData has upgraded its market forecast, anticipating stable light vehicle sales for the remainder of 2026 and 2027, reflecting sustained market confidence.
