New vehicle sales in Indonesia saw a substantial 32% year-on-year increase in August 2026, reaching 81,756 units. This growth was primarily fueled by robust demand for trucks and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
For the first eight months of 2026, the Indonesian vehicle market expanded by 20% compared to the same period last year. Sales of light passenger vehicles increased by over 13%, while commercial vehicle sales, particularly light and medium-duty trucks, surged by 54%, supported by government plans for rural development and logistics.
The BEV market demonstrated remarkable growth, nearly doubling to 103,300 units year-to-date, propelled by Chinese manufacturers and government tax incentives. Toyota maintained its market leadership, with Daihatsu and Suzuki also reporting significant sales increases.
Overall vehicle production rose by 13% in the first eight months, while exports saw a slight increase. This automotive sector boom occurs amidst moderating GDP growth and a recent interest rate hike by the central bank.
