India's Invisible Power Backbone Fuels Growth
17 Aug
Summary
- Electrical infrastructure is vital for AI and data centers.
- Indo SMC is shifting to higher-value substation equipment.
- Approvals, not factories, create a durable business moat.

India's escalating electricity demand, fueled by AI, data centers, and industrial growth, underscores the necessity of robust electrical infrastructure. Before any server is powered, substations and distribution networks require extensive electrical equipment. Indo SMC, initially a manufacturer of electrical enclosures and fiberglass products, is strategically transitioning to higher-value components such as Current Transformers and Potential Transformers for substations.
The company's competitive advantage lies in its established utility approvals across 20 states, a process that takes years and cannot be replicated by simply building more factories. This invisible moat is crucial as India invests heavily in its power transmission and distribution networks. Indo SMC's revenue more than doubled to Rs 310 crore in FY26, with significant growth anticipated for FY27, aiming for Rs 450-500 crore.
Indo SMC plans to launch Vacuum Circuit Breakers in August 2026. The company is investing Rs 25 crore from its IPO proceeds into machinery and testing infrastructure to enhance its existing facilities, supporting revenue targets beyond Rs 750 crore. Despite rapid expansion, working capital days increased to 88.5 in FY26 due to higher inventory, though debtor days significantly improved to 42 days.
