Airfares Skyrocket Amid IndiGo Chaos
5 Dec
Summary
- SpiceJet added new flights from Delhi and Mumbai to several routes.
- IndiGo cancelled over 400 flights, causing widespread disruption.
- Airfares on other airlines saw dramatic increases due to demand.

Domestic carrier SpiceJet has increased flight availability from Delhi and Mumbai amidst a significant operational crisis at IndiGo, which led to over 400 flight cancellations on Friday. Numerous passengers found themselves stranded at major Indian airports due to the widespread disruptions. SpiceJet announced additional departures on key routes, including those to Mumbai, Ayodhya, Pune, and Bengaluru.
The IndiGo flight cancellations significantly impacted air travel, with Delhi being the most affected, followed by Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The disruptions are reportedly linked to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) flight duty time limitation rules, although DGCA has since allowed relaxations. This situation has caused airfares across other airlines to surge dramatically.
Fares on routes like Delhi to Bengaluru and Delhi to Mumbai have reached exorbitant levels, with some flights priced over ₹1 lakh and ₹60,000 respectively. Even SpiceJet flights on certain routes were quoted at significantly inflated prices, reflecting the extreme demand and limited availability in the market.
